  B'Elanna grew up on the colony Kessik IV, where she and her mother were the only Klingons. This caused B'Elanna to feel different, and out of place. She was very close to her father until he left the colony when she was five years old. B'Elanna blaimed herself, and her Klingon appearance for his abandonment. Hating her Klingon look, she attempted to appear more human.
  B'Elanna attended Starfleet Academy for two years, pursuing an Engineering specialty before dropping out. At the Academy, she had four disciplinary hearings and one suspension. She joined the Maquis Rebellion in its early stages, serving as Engineer under Chakotay.
